Is this course for you?

This course is ideal for individuals looking to pursue a career as a Dental Technician. It is suitable for those who have an interest in dental science, enjoy practical, hands-on work, and are eager to develop specialist technical skills. The course is delivered part-time over three academic years, making it accessible for those balancing work or other commitments.

The Foundation Degree in Dental Technology at South Bank College is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become professional Dental Technicians. Upon completing the programme, graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the General Dental Council (GDC). Throughout the course, students will develop a comprehensive set of practical, theoretical, and behavioural competencies, preparing them for a career in the field of Dental Technology and offering a pathway to further academic or professional development.

The part-time course spans three academic years and is informed by industry feedback to ensure it aligns with current professional requirements. The curriculum consists of nine core modules that blend theoretical learning—such as anatomy, material science, and appliance design—with hands-on practice, ensuring that the students can apply their knowledge to real-world dental appliance creation.

The programme includes two ‘Employment Development’ modules, each requiring students to complete at least 150 hours of work experience in a dental laboratory setting. These placements are essential for bridging the gap between classroom instruction and the practical experience needed in the workplace.

The course is delivered using a blended learning approach. Students will attend both in-person sessions at South Bank College and live online classes, which are designed to meet the specific requirements of each module. Around half of the scheduled sessions will be conducted on campus, with the remainder delivered virtually, depending on whether the module focuses more on theoretical or practical skills.

What experience and skills will you gain?

Throughout the course, students will explore several key areas in Dental Technology. The current modules include:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Head and Neck.
  • Dental Materials Science.
  • Design and Manufacturing of Dental Appliances.
  • Professional Practice in Dental Technology.
  • Work Placement Modules (Employment Development 1 & 2).
  • Design and Manufacturing of Removable Prosthodontics.
  • Design and Manufacturing of Fixed Prosthodontics.

Modules may be subject to change as the field evolves or in response to feedback from students and industry stakeholders. Any significant changes to the curriculum will involve consultation with students, ensuring the course continues to meet their needs and expectations. Up-to-date module information and teaching schedules are available in the course handbook.
