BKSB Assessment Article Count: 2
A BKSB assessment gives us an initial indication of your current levels of understanding in both English and maths. We use the results of this computer-based assessment to plan the next stage in your education journey, so it is important the assessment is completed without any support from friends or family.
The BKSB assessment is not a test, so do not worry about failing it, but please do make sure you dedicate some quiet time so you can give it your full attention. If you wish to do any preparation for your assessment, we recommend that you visit a website such as www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise where you will be able to revise any areas you feel may need some practice.
You should have received a link to the assessment prior to your interview via email. Please ensure that you have completed the assessment at least 2 days prior to your interview date.
All 19+ applicants, who are unable to provide evidence of English and maths qualifications, will be asked to undertake a BKSB initial assessment as part of their college application to assess their current English and maths levels.
For more information on how to access and complete BKSB initial assessments please read the BKSB Guide.
If you are applying to study a specific English or maths course, you will need to undertake a slightly different assessment, and our English and maths team will provide you with details on what's expected.

Discover Your Potential with English at South Bank College – May to August Adult Courses
Looking to boost your confidence in reading, writing, and communication? Our English department offers a dynamic range of Functional Skills English qualifications and flexible, College Certificate preparation courses for adults from May to August. Whether you're working towards a nationally recognised qualification or simply want to improve your everyday English, our tailored classes are designed to meet your needs and fit around your life. Build your skills, open new doors, and take the next step with expert support in an inclusive, adult-focused learning environment. Your journey starts here!
Lambeth College is offering four different study programmes that focus on improving English, maths and employability skills
At first glance, English can seem like a confusing and complicated language. Do you use there, their, or they’re; is it your, you’re, or yore; and what’s the difference between its and it’s. And that’s before we even get to the homophones – those words that are spelt (or spelled) differently but pronounced the same – like stare/stair, aisle/isle, and suite/sweet.
Yes, the English language can be complicated, but here at Lambeth College, we teach it simply.
Whether you’re looking to advance to further study, land your perfect job, or just improve your English skills for everyday life, we have a wide range of English qualifications and courses, specifically designed to aid adult learners. With seven levels available - from Entry Level 2 Functional Skills, all the way up to GCSE English – we’ll help you find the perfect level to match your current skills and future ambitions.
So, if you’re looking to take your first step towards your perfect career, return to education, or just make more sense of the words you read and hear every day; you’re just one step away from gaining a nationally-recognised qualification with Lambeth College.
And don’t worry, not even our expert tutors think the word yacht makes any sense.
If, following the outcome of your assessment, you are not quite ready for Functional Skills at a specific level, we will be able to offer you an alternative course at the same level, which has no exam, and this will enable you to develop your skills to then progress onto Functional Skills. These courses are available at every level (except Entry 1) and are RARPA courses (Recognising And Recording Progress and Achievement). Your course will be tailored to you and your progress will be monitored with an Individual learning plan, you will also receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the course.
The levels we offer are:
- Adult Entry 1 Edexcel Functional Skills English
- Adult Entry 2 Edexcel Functional Skills English
- Adult Entry 3 Edexcel Functional Skills English
- Adult Level 1 Edexcel Functional Skills English
- Adult Level 2 Edexcel Functional Skills English
- Adult GCSE English (AQA)
Please click on the Functional Skills or GCSE course link at the top of the page to apply, and secure your place.
