The nursery, recently rated outstanding by Ofsted, ran a successful pilot workshop earlier this year for children, staff and parents. The 3 and 4-year olds had the chance to learn some of the basics of coding and to create an image with the aid of a microbit. “We are in a digital age now and I believe there is a gap in the early years curriculum for this kind of activity,” said Nursery Manager Pamela Hammond. “Introducing the children to coding at an early age will help them in their scientific and mathematical development and also supports the wider emphasis on encouraging pupils into STEM subjects.” Following positive feedback from everyone involved, the nursery now plans to run a further three coding workshops, one of these will run in November this year. “The children and parents absolutely loved it and the staff are also benefitting from the opportunity to build their computing skills,” said Pamela.
